Making Paper Ponchos at Kids Camp

I taught costume for most of the day, the kids made a fantastic mess and after repeated warnings not to get it on the white walls they were smeared with rainbows. My voice was hoarse from shouting.

Experienced the first shower time, one hour to get 60ish 8/9 year old girls in and out of the shower and ready for evening activity with long trousers, long tops, fleeces and torches, a near impossible task, might but this on my CV. The kids would run about, they loved the nakedness, a few I had to repeatedly tell them to get clothes on, they loved it. That was a bizarre hour every day.

Evening activities basically involved running around from group leader to group leader in groups in the dark with torches. All good fun and games until one of the older children started a rumour there was monsters in the woods, well apparently it started as a fox, then a monster, then dead monsters, and apparently someone had seen a dead body. Of course, this caused hysteria among everyone, girls were crying, boys were crying, kids wouldn’t move, we had to reassure, hug and cuddle and repeat that it wasn’t true. Although it would have been funny to embellish these stories, I didn’t think it was wise. Managed to get some of the kids to play but then there was a crazy crack of a rainstorm, I was still hiding in my tree ready to flash them with my torch (which is what I was meant to do) and I was trying to radio for someone to tell me if the game was off. Sitting in a tree in a lightning and thunderstorm. Again, is this my life?

These posts are cool too...
