My Week Exploring Where to Ski Near Munich Airport

Last week I went skiing in Austria and Germany with Lufthansa, and a bunch of excellent Instagrammers from around the world. We did so much in six days in so many places – thank the phone for geotagging and photos, or I’d never remember it all.

All this is less than two hours from Munich Airport.

Or, if you go by helicopter, 15 minutes…

DISCLAIMER: All this happened in six days, no exaggeration

Day one

Early morning flight

From Birmingham to Munich with Lufthansa – easy airport, easy flight, all good.

two hours from Munich

Lufthansa helicopter ride direct to Kitzbuhel

Meet the team for 20 windy minutes in the air over Munich and the mountains.

Helicopter Lufthansa

Pick up by Audi

Took us to the ski hire place – felt like a rock star.

Lodge in Austria

Check in to the Hahnenkamm Lodge

It’s a favourite of celebs and VIPs, just like what I felt like this last week.

Austria Lodge

Lodge Champagne reception

After exploring the Hahnenkamm Lodge that is – possibly the fanciest place I’ve ever stayed.

Champagne in Austria

First ski of the week

Not a good idea to try and keep up with an Oakley sponsored skier, the owner of a ski magazine and someone who’s been skiing since she was a kid – I fell over about five times, before I gave up and went by myself. Definitely not up to ski instructor standards – couldn’t keep up with them.

Lufthansa snow trip

Skidoo ride

Had to change my boots – poor workman blames their tools, etc – glad I had this dude to take me to the gondola.

Skidoo round Austria

Time to relax

The most technical bath I’ve ever been in – disco lights, epic bubbles, massage jets and all.

Fancy trip with Lufthansa

Dinner at the lodge

Three courses of deliciousness topped off with a schnapps.

Candlelight walk

Up to the church on top of the mountain looking out over the city, stunning.

Day two

Early morning ski

Before everyone else gets the gondola we got to go down from the lodge – my guide Susi pointed out all the key accident locations to me, fun.

Early morning ski in Austria

Eggy and salmon breakfast

Sensational, seriously – didn’t take a pic though so here’s the apple strudel instead.

Hanahkammen Ldoge

More skiing with Susi

She’s a mountain guide in the winter and a scuba instructor in the summer – hero – a brilliant teacher, guide and now friend.

Susi and me in Austria

Lunch at the mountain hut

I chose schnitzel with a bowl of sauerkraut, washed back with a schnapps.

Absolutely stunning vistas – getting used to the bumpier terrain here.

Paragliding with Element3

I ran off the mountain and landed 850m later right by the après ski in Streifalm – absolutely incredible.

Apres ski in Kitzbuhel

Schnapps, gluhwein and watching out for the others – goodbye Kitzbuhel.

Journey to our super luxe house

We had a four-bed luxury house complete with fancy fixtures, a hot tub, sauna and steam room.

Dinner at Bio-Hotel Stanglwirt

It’s the best spa hotel in Austria and home to a restaurant with a room where you can watch the cows graze – there are also thrones for toilets.

Day three

Went for a snowboarding lesson in Ellmau – loved it, spent a lot of time of my bum but defo want to do it again.

snowboarding lesson

Lunch here

I had veal sausage and sauerkraut, unexpectedly yum, the snow was ruining visibility but looking good!

Lunch in Austria

Visited the Igloo village in Hochbrixen

Enjoyed more gluhwein and a look at the ice bar, restaurant and hotel, all built just last week, out of snow and ice!

Steam room and hot tub at the house

Imagine living a life where this is at your disposal? Amazing and absolutely incredible to have in our garden.

Hot tub in the house

Went sledging in Zillertal

It was a long way down the 4km Witches Run – kind of cold, kind of scary and totally amazing.

Sledging

Fondue dinner at Gasthof Restaurant Perauer

I felt like a right fat beast by the end, but it was fun, and it was in an old cheese factory.

Austria with Lufthansa

Had to sledge down

We left it so late the lift had closed, a lot of effort after the fondue and gluhwein excess but great fun.

Zillertal sledging

Day four

Breakfast at the Back Bakery

An on piste bakery with fresh pastries and bread every day – the baker was a lot of fun and loved having his pic taken!

Back Bakery

Checked into Das Posthotel

This is one of the most beautiful hotels I’ve ever stayed in – and I was lucky enough to get the best room in the hotel.

Accommodation

Went skiing in Zillertal

Again, too difficult to keep up with those guys but at least it pushed me.

Views over Platzlalm

Lunch at Platzlalm on the mountain

Enjoyed the Lufthansa chairs in the sun before the pork burgers inside, again, washed down with Schnapps.

Burgers in Austria on the slopes

Tried Kaiserschmarren

First time for me for this yummy pancake delight, but definitely not the last.

Dessert in Austria

Went skiing

Made sure to do my own thing, much better going at a speed I’m comfortable with.

Apres ski gluhwein

There were random Brazilian carnival celebrations going on – celebrating Carnival time around the world.

Restaurant Alexander for dinner

We had 7 courses and two desserts, with wine to match, all cooked by Austrian celeb chef Alexander Fankhauser at the Hotel Lamark.

Day five

Mayrhofen gondolas

Went up the new swanky Mayrhofen gondolas – with absolutey incredible views over the valley, in comfort.

Ski around

Free to do my own thing, going my own speed and taking in the views.

Mahyrhofen

Met for après at Schneekar Hutte

A fancy pyramid hotel with antlers everywhere and beautiful views – gluhwein and Champers all round.

Austria

Dinner and look around the Schneekar Hutte

Would love to stay here one day – right on top of the mountain, amazingly decorated and the food was delicious.

Back down in the snowcat

It was like a rollercoaster ride, an awesome one which had us screaming and shouting down the slopes to the bottom – so much fun!

Apres ski at in Mahyrhofen

Danced on the stage to Avicii, drank beer, drank schnapps, loved it.

Day six

Skiing at Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Started the day with this view from the edge of the world – stunning.

Stood on the edge of the world

Women’s World Cup, live!

Watched some of the Women’s World Cup skiers coming down at crazy speeds – felt awesome to be on the slopes at the same time as these athletes.

Lunch at Drehmoser

I had a skiers snack board in the sun, feeling super happy and super satisfied after scoffing this.

Yummy food on the slopes of Germany

Final skiing sesh

This was it, the final ski session of not just the week, but the entire season for me, and it was a stunning place to do it.

Exploring Austria via ski

Drive to the Hilton at Munich Airport

It was a 90-minute drive past quaint houses, interesting parks and the world famous BMW factory in Munich – I got upgraded at the hotel too, sweet! Something important involving Bayern Munich footballers was happening…

Hilton Hotel

Dinner at Airbrau

Munich Airport is the only one with a brewery, so we went – snack board and spinach dumplings, yum.

Day seven

Home time, via the Lufthansa VIP Senator Lounge

Oh my days they had a pick n mix, obvs just ate that and ignored all the proper food.

Munich Airport Senators Lounge

It’s been an absolutely incredible week – full of money-can’t-buy experiences as well as ones a lot of money can. I’ll remember this week for as long as I can, and would happily visit any of the resorts again, I hope you’ll get to, too!

Ever been to any of these resorts? Thoughts?
