#BloggerRelay: My Top 3 Travel Memories

#GoTeamPurple! With Neil from backpacksandbedbunks.com as my team’s coach and team leader we’re sure to win the lowcostholidays.com #BloggerRelay competition. Apparently there’s no running, diving or swimming skills required (bit disappointed) instead, all I need to do is reveal my gold, silver and bronze travel memories and then pass the baton on. Do it well and me, Neil and the rest of #TeamPurple could be in with the chance of winning some top prizes. Am I using too many hashtags?

I managed to collect the baton from Neil without too much of a fumble (wahey!) so here are my winning travel memories (that I dare to publish)…

Bronze: Cancun with Lisa

When I was 20 I worked at summer camp for 12 weeks. By week 10 I couldn’t wait to get out of there, come week 11 and I was devastated to be leaving. I was absolutely exhausted, had tonsillitis and sick of the sight of children, but had had a brilliant summer. Me and my new friend Lisa decided to top it off with a week in Cancun, Mexico. We went a bit crazy with the freedom after being ‘responsible adults’ all summer. It was a hectic week filled with boys – we were the on-stage judges for a hot man competition – tequila, partying, drinking and scuba diving.

Best Travel Memories

Best keep the party pics private!

I wouldn’t go on a holiday like this now and that’s what makes it more perfect, it was a week in time that will never happen again. She’s got a little boy now and I’d hate the thought of downing 5 tequilas in a row and then dancing on the bar with the locals (ahem)…

Silver: Ibiza with my bro and Kellie

Travel Memories

Shimmering in Space, Ibiza

What do you do when you finish uni, have no job and get some unexpected tax back? Book a long weekend in Ibiza, obviously! My brother was working for the summer out there and had an apartment with his friend. I rounded up another friend, Kellie, from a summer at camp and me and her made our way out there the next week.

We bought a bottle of rum in the airport, drank it on the way while listening to the in-flight techno tunes and arrived at Ibiza airport just after midnight to my brother who took us straight to Amnesia. We had an incredible blur of a few days partying with the workers and my brother taking the lead to get us to the best day parties, boat parties and clubs. I don’t think I actually slept.

I literally hated my brother for the first 19 years of my life and vowed many times to never speak to him when I grew up, so to hang out with him for five days really felt special. We bonded on this trip and have been good mates as well as siblings ever since.

Gold: Working with Waiels

During mine and the boyfriend’s five months travelling through Europe we joined the Workaway scheme. You basically choose your project and work for five hours a day in return for bed and some board.

We worked in Spain, Italy and the Czech Republic doing anything from laying paths to pruning olive trees to painting holiday villas and cleaning out drainpipes. At the time it sometimes felt like gruelling work, but when I look back on the few weeks that me and my boyfriend worked side by side outside in the sunshine to create something tangible I realise that it really was the best summer of my life.

Workaway in Spain

Those squares around the windows were evil to paint!

Special mentions

Runners up that I actually feel bad for not using include exploring the Serengeti, seeing New York City for the first time and having my best friends teach me how to ski in Slovenia. Oh and the first time I saw the beaches in Zanzibar, and Glastonbury, and Oslo

Quick, Monica from thetravelhack.com, catch the baton. Run with it like you’ve never run before… #GoTeamPurple!

  1. “I managed to collect the baton from Neil without too much of a fumble (wahey!)” – RUDE! … but funny.

Your Ibiza experience sounds amazing, I so want to go there! Straight off the plane and into a club is pretty badass. Workaway sounds like just what my mate is looking for, I will pass on your ‘What is Workaway’ page.

    #teampurple

    • Haha! Ibiza was immense – I’ve been a few times now, love to go again. And if your friend needs any advice or help with Workaway send him to me :) #teampurple

      • She said she might come along to the next travel massive so you might get to meet her. She’s off to Oz in November and thinking about Woofing or something similar. I’ve sent her your page anyway. Thanks!

        • I decided Workaway sounded better because you get such an amazing range of projects to choose from. But cool, hope to see her then :)

  2. Ibiza was a once off for me… probably because I live in Australia… and also because I’m getting too old to party til sunrise. I think Cafe Del Mar is more my scene these days.

Workaway looks like something I’d be into for a few weeks (at least).

Variety. The spice of life after-all.

    • Thanks Ian. Yeah Ibiza is a crazy, crazy place! I love it, but yeah feel like I’m getting old now. Maybe I need a weekend there to recapture my youth. Hmmmm, tempting :)

  3. Loved this blogger relay! I shall be at the farthest line perhaps to get the baton though! I love your most memorable travel experiences Vicky!

    Cheers!

  4. Amazing memories Vic. Go #TeamPurple!

So I’ve grabbed the baton like my life depended on it and I’m doing my frantic run (I run like Phoebe on Friends so watch out!)

  5. Great trips Vicky. Cancun and Ibiza sound so awesome and fun and the workaway scheme is a noble and fun way to spend a vacation. #TeamPurple Rulz!!

  6. The Gold sounds like a special one! I’ve never been part of a workaway scheme, but my experiences volunteering abroad certainly rank as some of my best. :)

    • Yeah, definitely. You get to meet so many different people volunteering, and you also get to meet locals you never would normally. I definitely recommend it to everyone and anyone!

  7. C’mon Team Purple!! Love these travel memories; I have fond memories of Ibiza myself!

  8. The thing about Ibiza is that either you remember it as the best party holiday ever or you don’t remember anything (wink wink) … There is no in-between :-)

  9. #TeamPurple!!!! Yeah I like the Ibiza story – get off a plane and start your drink on! I think I will need do some serious liver traininig before I go to Ibiza…

    • Ha, yeah – mine took quite a battering. Although drinks are about ten euros each in the clubs so it’s all about the pre-party beach party to save money :)

    • Haha, great news! Yes, you definitely have to go and see it for yourself – it’s honestly one of the most incredible places in the world. Love it!

  13. I’ve heard about workaway and even looked into it pretty extensively before I landed my current traveling gig but it’s really cool to actually hear a bit about your experience with it. it sounds truly fulfilling and worthwhile, now I definitely think I’ll give it a go. Such fun adventures you’ve had! :)

    • Hey Arielle, yeah, I absolutely love Workaway. Love talking about it and wish more people would cotton on to it! Hopefully one day I’ll get tyo do it again…

  14. I also hated my sister when I was younger. Now, she is my best friend and it is I who ask her to take me out..
