5 of the Best Things to Do in Turkey in 2018

Turkey was the second country I ever visited, after France. I went on a school trip when I was in Year 9, and loved it. Mainly because I had a brilliant time with my friends and it felt oh so exotic, being in Turkey. But also, because of ticking off some of the lost list of things to do in Turkey.

We went to Ephesus and saw the amphitheatre, we went to Troy and saw the horse and we explored all the sights of Istanbul and Izmir.

I would share photos but who knows where they are. Just imagine a fat faced 14-year-old with a big smile on her face stood on the edge of Ephesus, wearing some sort of totally uncool clothes, probably Kappa trousers.

Yep, you got it.

Looking out over Turkey

I went back when I was 27, for a gin and tonic. My friend Chloe and I took a boat trip over to Marmaris from our holiday in Rhodes and basically had a kebab and then climbed a mountain for what remains the best gin and tonic experience I’ve ever had, and then went back to Greece.

One day, I’ll go again, and when I do, this is what I’ll do.

5 of the Best Things to Do
in Turkey in 2018

1. Fly in a hot air balloon over Cappadoccia

best things to do in turkey

This is definitely on my list of things I want to achieve in life, flying in a hot air balloon over Cappadoccia is popular for a reason. Look at it!

Cappadoccia is a town built into the mountains of a volcanic eruption in Turkey, which makes for some really cool accommodation opportunities. I remember back when I was working at HostelBookers.com and didn’t know anything about travel, well so it seems now, and being totally blown away by how cool the rooms were at some of the hotels there.

I’d love to go to Cappadoccia one day.

2. Relax on the beaches

best things to do in turkey

Turkey has some stunning beaches, many of which you can get good package deals to. If you’re looking for the absolute best though, look at Butterfly Valley in Oludeniz, or Kabak Valley near Fathiye. Patara, the longest beach in Turkey, also looks amazing.

3. Spend up at the Grand Bazaar

best things to do in turkey

One of the best things to do in Turkey, is to go to the Grand Bazaar. We went on the aforementioned school trip. I remember one vendor offering my teacher a few camels for me, which at 15 I totally took as a personal compliment and decided he loved me. Others were calling us Spice Girls as we giggled and laughed, thinking we were sooo special.

Bless us.

But anyway, as one of the biggest markets in the world the Grand Bazaar is a great place to pick up a few treats for yourself and your mates. From spices to lamps to anything you could possibly imagine. Definitely get yourself down here for some genuine 2018 Turkish tat.

Obviously the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque nearby should definitely be on your itinerary if you’re in Istanbul. It’d be kinda stupid to miss them out.

4. Bathe at the Pamukkale hot springs

best things to do in turkey

Pamukkale looks incredible. I only saw a picture of it about two years ago and I was like, WHERE IS THAT?

Well, it’s in Izmir, in Turkey, and I want to go one day. Pamukkale is a geographical phenomenon, a mini plateaux with hot spring water flowing down from the top of the mountain. On its way down it adds white limestone to the ancient plateaux creating the unusual effect. Bathing here is apparently good for your health, so travelling to Turkey is basically medicinal.

5. Lord it up at the Dolmabahçe Palace

things to do in turkey

The Dolmabahçe Palace is stunning – Ottoman opulence at its absolute best and should be on any best things to do in Turkey list. The whole place is decked out with gold and crystal and it is fa-a-a-anncy.

The world’s largest Bohemian crystal chandelier is in the Ceremonial Hall – get your Instagram round that one. Oh my god there’s even a crystal staircase, sounds amazing!

If you want, you can see the exact spot where President Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s died, at 9:05pm. All the clocks have been set to that time. Spoooooky.

If not, just spend your time ogling the historic carpets, the precious stones used for decoration and the priceless oil paintings decorating the walls.

Sounds amazing!

Fancy a holiday to Turkey?
I definitely do now!

I was just talking about my time in Turkey in another blog when Google suggested me your post. The Grand Bazaar brings back so many memories and right now I;m staring at a tulip-shaped vase I still have from there. Must be more than 15 years now. God, Turkey is beautiful and more people should go there. Thanks for writing this, dear.

Yeah, think I need to get there again. Feel like it'd be a great place for a week's adventurous trip. You could really get some sightseeing done in a short amount of time. Or, go for longer and soak up the atmosphere. Either option sounds like a great idea to me!

This is what I like about Turkey and the best thing is seeing the flying hot air balloons. It looks so festive and I hope to witness it again. Thanks for sharing.

Always want to visit Izmir for Pamukkale. For me, the only thing left to do among top 5 listed in Turkey, atleast once in a life.

Oh me too! Pamukkale looks absolutely incredible, I'd love to see it for myself. I've seen some incredible photos and videos from there.
