7 Things You Need To Do In Melbourne

Melbourne in Australia is a really happening city right now. It’s packed with culture, amazing restaurants and bars, and cool shopping areas. If you’re heading that way soon, here are some of the things that you need to put on your ‘to-do’ list – one for each day of the week.

1. Drink the night away

If you want an exclusive place to nurse a cocktail or two, you need to check out Beneath Driver Lane. It’s a much-celebrated, but chilled place to drink. They have turned an old bank vault into a really stunning but discreet place. They have a modern cocktail menu and over 100 whiskies, if that’s your tipple of choice.

2. Get Instagram-ing at Centre Place

Centre Place in Melbourne is a really hip place that’s full of street art murals to do those all-important Instagram poses in-front of. There’s also a good selection of places to eat and shop. It’s one of the city’s laneways and is full of cafes and coffee shops to grab lunch in. There’s also some cool vintage stores to have a browse in.

3. Visit some museums

If you head to the National Gallery of Victoria, you can see the largest stain-glassed ceiling in the world. The museum is also home to a huge collection of classic, modern and abstract art. Another great museum to check out is the Australian Centre for Moving Image. They have cool movie props from Hollywood blockbusters shot in Australia, and costumes worn by top Australian actors and on-screen stars.

4. Go shopping at Queen Victoria Market

This cute market has stalls housed in sheds, and they are selling everything from fresh sugared doughnuts to Melbourne souvenirs and homeware. If you want to get some gifts for people back home, this is a good place to find something original from an independent seller, and you can enjoy a tasty snack at the same time.

5. Take in some nature

Visit the city’s Royal Botanical Gardens – the greenest place in Melbourne. There are 94-acres of flowers and other plant life. The cacti are particularly stunning. There are mini-ecosystems to explore, and you can discover plants that are indigenous to the rainforest. Head to their visitor centre and book at tour to really get the most out of your visit.

6. Grab dinner at South Melbourne Market

This place is home to a ton of street-food stalls, and runs on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Expect crepes, churros and gourmet ice-cream, along with burgers and Chinese dumplings. The market has been around for 150 years. I would wear trousers with a loose waistband when you visit here!

7. View it from above

To really get the best views of Melbourne, you need to see it from up high. If you visit the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel, you can get panoramic views of the city. It’s particularly stunning at night when you can see a sea of lights. You get a viewing pod and you can see up to 40km away from 40 stories high.
