An Awesome Breakfast in Budapest: by The New York Cafe

We wanted to eat the best breakfast in Budapest to recover from the previous night at Sziget Festival, and to give us the energy to get through the final night.

The Top 10 Budapest book my friend had, recommended we try the New York Cafe. Without thinking about it too much off we went. It turned out to be a brilliant decision.

As soon as my friend and I spotted the building from our tram stop 2 minutes’ walk away we were ooing and wowing. The outside of the building is incredible.

Not a patch on the baroque opulence that greeted us inside though. I nearly walked into a few tables I was too busy staring at the hand painted ceiling and the gold plated walls.

The New York Cafe, or Boscolo New York Cafe as it’s called now, is still decorated as it was when it opened. The ceiling frescoes were created by Gusztav Mannheimer and Ferenc Eisenhut at the time and the Venetian chandeliers are exactly the same ones as they were then. The whole place reminded my of my breakfast at Cafe Majestic in Porto, although on a much grander scale.

The New York Cafe treatment

We were shown to our seats and at 11:30am had unfortunately missed the breakfast buffet, but we could still order from the breakfast a la carte menu. There was so much to choose from.

After much deliberation we ended up with poached eggs, French toast, American pancakes, Hungarian sausages and wursts. All served up with a healthy dose of cappuccinos, power smoothies and freshly squeezed orange juice. And seeing as it was such an occasion, of course we had to have Champagne too, hand selected by the sommelier our waitress told us. Get me!

Cool staff and great prices too

Every part of the New York Cafe breakfast was delicious. I’d especially recommend the American pancakes, they were so soft and buttery.

5 breakfasts, two orange juices, a pineapple juice, a cappuccino and four Champagnes came to around £80, so £20 each. Bargain!

The staff at the New York Cafe were awesome – they were fun and had some good banter. My always overly polite friend asked if the waiter knew where the toilets were, he told her he had no idea and got back to work. Then he started laughing. Made us all laugh too, especially seeing as it came from someone working somewhere like that.

Little bit of history

Coming from the bright lights of Sziget Festival our morning at the New York Cafe was a welcome change to the side of Budapest we’d seen over the last week. The cafe is brilliantly OTT and if you think about the history of the Belle Epoque building, as explained on the menu, it’s always been a place for intellectual and creative spirits to meet and chew the fat. The most influential newspapers of Eastern Europe were edited here, upstairs in the gallery, and writers and editors would meet downstairs to discuss the latest events. Undoubtedly, it was the perfect place for my three friends from journalism college and I to enjoy our final group breakfast in Budapest.

It’s open till 3am, I’m tempted to go back and try the cocktails…
