5 Best Pubs with Playgrounds on the Isle of Wight
Looking for somewhere on the Isle of Wight where the kids can burn off some energy so you actually get to enjoy your lunch while it’s still hot? You’re in the right place.

If you’re looking for a country pub with a big outdoor play area, a seaside spot where the kids can burn off some energy, or just somewhere relaxed with good food and a family-friendly feel, there are plenty of great pubs with play areas across the Isle of Wight.
My four year old son and I have trawled the Isle of Wight on our many trips looking for the best pub for both of us. And, we have more IOW trips coming up this summer so you can expect more to be added throughout 2026.
The best family pubs are the ones where everyone enjoys themselves – the kids stay busy, the adults get a chance to switch off, and the food’s actually worth coming for too. Here goes…
1. The Fighting Cocks
Arreton Valley

The Fighting Cocks has an amazing play area. We were honestly astounded when we got out of the car – we weren’t expecting it to be this good!
They had a bouncing pillow, a bouncy castle, two climbing frames and slides (one for the little kiddies), loads of space to run around, some swings and this massive sand pit with loads of toys too.

The managers here knew what they were doing when they set this up. I could honestly stay here all day. Reggie made some friends and they had a great time on the bouncing pillow. Unfortunately I was driving so sat with a lemonade, to watch him enjoy himself building a moat with his new buddies.
The Fighting Cocks is only about 15 minutes from the Fishbourne crossing from Portsmouth. Making it a great stop on your way in or out, especially if you’re just visiting for the day or on the island for a weekend.
2. Woodman’s Arms
Wootton

We stopped for lunch at The Woodman’s Arms. Lovely staff there, so kind and friendly. And the lady I spoke to gave great advice on what to choose too. While Reggie had his classic macaroni cheese, I went for the falafel salad and flatbread. I’d been worried it’d just be three balls dry on the plate, but as you can see from the photo – it was perfect.
Reggie gave his 100 out of 100, and I have to say mine was a solid 10/10 too.

This pub had a great play area for its size, with busy boards, mess tables and a playground with a slide too. There were also tables to enjoy the view, and sit out while the kids played.

3. The Blacksmith’s
Newport
After a busy day on the Isle of Wight I was so excited to get to The Blacksmith’s and get my order in, only to find… no food orders till 5:30pm. Reggie and I were absolutely gutted. For various reasons we were leaving at 5:30pm and had had a very light lunch in anticipation of our early pub feast.

So, we had to make do with a packet of salt and vinegar crisps and some salt and pepper cashew nuts (which were actually really tasty). For that reason, I cannot review the food here, only the fact that as pubs with playgrounds go, this one was brilliant. So much space!

There was an area for Little Tikes houses, a climbing frame with two slides, a swing, a little house and loads of room for kids to run around. There was also a great view, best enjoyed from the staggered tables and benches.

There is a car park here – which was a decent size – but I’m going to assume (purely based on how great it was) that it gets very busy here. So, I’m not sure where you park then. We got the bus from Newport which handily dropped us at the stop right outside. And then, you don’t have to drive – ciders all round!
4. The Smoke House
Robin Hill
I visited Robin Hill when The Smoke House had recently opened, and THANK GOD I clocked the signs as I didn’t even know it was there. The (half) fruity cider and smorgasbord of meat were such a delight after hours of activities in the country park.

So this isn’t really a ‘pub with a playground’ – more of a country park with a smoke house, but being the only one on the Isle of Wight, I couldn’t write a whole post about that.
If you want somewhere the kids can play, and you can get an absolutely delicious meal at the end of it, then it still ticks the boxes.

I’d recommend you choose a platter to sample as much as possible, or a sharers board. The meat just fell off the bone – it was incredible.
As for the play part, there are some wooden Wendy houses just next door to The Smoke House for the kiddies while you wait. But that’s not all – there’s also a maze, boats, diggers, a toboggan, tractor rides, spiderwebs, squirrel runs, and 88 acres to run around in. You’ll earn that macaroni and cheese, trust me!
The Smoke House is in Robin Hill, just 10 minutes drive from Fishbourne and 16 minutes’ drive from Ryde. I loved the food here – the restaurant has definitely made it onto my list of the best restaurants on the Isle of Wight.
You don’t have to pay to enter Robin Hill if you just want to go to The Smoke House – just follow the signs.
5. The Cow
Tapnell Farm
If you want a pub meal where the kids are completely entertained while you sit back with a drink and a good burger, The Cow at Tapnell Farm is hard to beat. This place is brilliant for families with older children.

The restaurant itself is famous on the Isle of Wight for its burgers, loaded fries and massive portions, and after eating here I can absolutely see why. The burgers are huge, and taste great out in the countryside.

Outside, there’s loads for children to do. You’ve got the outdoor play areas, jumping pillows, space to run around and all the extra activities around Tapnell Farm. Depending on when you visit, you can also add on the Aqua Park, football golf or the farm park too, so this can easily become a whole day out rather than just lunch.
I also love that there’s loads of outdoor seating, so even if the kids keep jumping up every five minutes, it doesn’t feel like you’re disturbing anyone. Family pubs on the Isle of Wight really don’t get much better than this.
