As part of its Go with CO campaign, Project Shout is giving one lucky reader of my blog the chance to win a travel-friendly CO alarm + £100 outdoors voucher to help you get holiday ready this summer. It can be used at Blacks, Millets, Ultimate Outdoors, GO Outdoors, and JD Sports, so enter below!

Project Shout is a campaign group raising awareness about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning and the importance of having a carbon monoxide alarm.
Whether you’re planning a family holiday abroad or a short staycation with friends in the UK, you should always Go with CO. An audible carbon monoxide detector is the only way to be alerted to a carbon monoxide leak, as the gas can’t be smelt, tasted or seen.
Common symptoms of CO poisoning
Key symptoms include headaches, nausea, dizziness, breathlessness, collapse and loss of consciousness. An audible CO alarm will give you time to seek medical treatment to prevent serious illness, or even death. The symptoms of carbon monoxide positioning can be subtle, and are frequently mistaken for a common illness, like the flu.
By packing a portable CO alarm in your suitcase, you will have peace of mind to enjoy your holiday with your loved ones. The prize includes a travel-friendly CO alarm featuring a digital display, cutting-edge sensing technology and BSI Kitemark approval, to help you stay safe on holiday.
More on the alarms
These alarms are certified for use both in the home and when travelling or staying in tents, caravans and boats.
The pre alarm early warnings show on a digital LCD screen with reduced-volume chirps before full-alarm mode is reached, giving you more time to respond to rising CO levels.
When not showing CO readings and warnings, temperature is displayed instead. The quiet test function also allows for low volume testing.
They can be left free standing or wall mounted. At home they’re ideal for kitchens, boiler rooms, and anywhere gas or solid fuel burning appliances are located. They monitor carbon monoxide, temperature and humidity levels.

Q. What is your top travel safety tip?

If you’re taking your CO alarm on a plane, you need to make sure the type you take is suitable for travel. Many CO alarms come with a pin which you simply pull out to activate the alarm – leave this pin in place before you travel, and when you reach your destination and set your CO alarm up, save the pin so you can reinsert it for the journey home. If your CO alarm has a removable battery, the batteries must be removed and taken separately when flying.
More useful tips
- Even if you’re travelling within the UK, it’s important to remember that Airbnb properties and hotels might not have adequate CO alarms to protect you from the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning.
- When booking holiday properties, it’s vital to check if they have carbon monoxide alarms particularly when regulations in other countries differ. Some booking sites include this information in their listings, but it’s always best to be prepared before you arrive.
- Gas boilers, heaters, open fires and fuel burning appliances are all common sources of carbon monoxide in a home which could potentially leak and lead to CO poisoning.

Make sure you have some basic medical items for dodgy tummies etc,(Imodium) throat lozenges for the air con and aspirin as can be expensive abroad.
Always research local emergency numbers before you travel and keep them saved in your phone and written down separately. I also take a photo of my passport, insurance details, and any bookings—just in case I lose anything.
Always take a travel plug & a multi charging cable with multiple charging connectors so you can travel all your different devices without having to take several different leads.
When exploring unfamiliar areas, especially crowded streets or public transport, avoid wearing flip-flops. While they’re comfy for the beach, they can slow you down in emergencies and increase the risk of tripping or injury. Opt for secure, closed-toe shoes when sightseeing for added protection and support. Lots of accidents are caused from wearing flipflops, don’t ruin your holiday
Take and use sun cream factor 50 even if in hazy sun, or only outside for a short time. By being careless, I now have melanoma which I wouldn’t wish on anyone.
Print off or write down any essential contact information and booking info etc so if you lose your mobile or your battery dies then you still have all the necessary details to get by.
Ah yes that’s a really good idea. When you get to your accommodation you should grab a business card too – just so you know exactly where your hotel is!
When travelling to developing countries one of the must-do, great experiences is eating delicious street food. Try and go to stalls that are used by local office and factory workers – they know who to trust and who to avoid.
I love eating street food! Such a good idea when you’re travelling solo too.
keep digital copies of everything in case you lose it
Don’t draw the attention of criminals by displaying items they may wish to steal
Always carry a charging rod with you so you can charge your phone if you have no battery.
Oh good plan. Solar chargers can be a good idea too!
Drop a pin to your location whereever you go so people know where you are if anything happens
Good plan! When I was travelling full time I had a spreadsheet where I kept all my dates and plans and hotels. I gave my dad access to the spreadsheet so he could see exactly where I was and where I was going.
make a list of medications and check it twice before packing
Always put sunscreen on your wrists. Especially if pushing a buggy or riding a bicycle. It’s a part of our body that rarely gets exposed to sunlight for long periods of time and especially if you are like me with freckles/moles.
Download an offline map app like maps.me so you can always see the route your taxi driver is taking or where to go when lost walking!
Great plan! I often get nervy in taxis so I like to follow the route on Google Maps as they go. Love your idea to help save data.
Have a tracking device (i.e apple tag etc) whenever you venture away from where you are staying.
Oh good idea. You can do Find my Friends too.
my top travel tip; keep your phone charged in case of emergency!
When travelling with young children, always ensure that they wear a clip on tag or clothing label with your contact details including calling code, in case they get lost!
Oh such a good plan. You’ve inspired me to just buy one for our next festival!
always let someone know where you are going so someone knows where you are
My top travel safety tip is to download all your maps to your phone so you can use them offline. Saved me many times!
Keep digital copies of your passport, ID, and insurance on your phone just in case. Even if you just scan them it’s a good idea to have all the details at hand.
Great idea. I hear too many stories about people losing them abroad!
My top travel safety tip would be to use packing cubes. It really helps you to stay organised, especially if you’re using a backpack. I use them like drawers.
Always pack a first aid kit!
