As part of its Go with CO campaign, Project Shout is giving one lucky reader of my blog the chance to win a travel-friendly CO alarm + £100 outdoors voucher to help you get holiday ready this summer. It can be used at Blacks, Millets, Ultimate Outdoors, GO Outdoors, and JD Sports, so enter below!

Project Shout is a campaign group raising awareness about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning and the importance of having a carbon monoxide alarm.
Whether you’re planning a family holiday abroad or a short staycation with friends in the UK, you should always Go with CO. An audible carbon monoxide detector is the only way to be alerted to a carbon monoxide leak, as the gas can’t be smelt, tasted or seen.
Common symptoms of CO poisoning
Key symptoms include headaches, nausea, dizziness, breathlessness, collapse and loss of consciousness. An audible CO alarm will give you time to seek medical treatment to prevent serious illness, or even death. The symptoms of carbon monoxide positioning can be subtle, and are frequently mistaken for a common illness, like the flu.
By packing a portable CO alarm in your suitcase, you will have peace of mind to enjoy your holiday with your loved ones. The prize includes a travel-friendly CO alarm featuring a digital display, cutting-edge sensing technology and BSI Kitemark approval, to help you stay safe on holiday.
More on the alarms
These alarms are certified for use both in the home and when travelling or staying in tents, caravans and boats.
The pre alarm early warnings show on a digital LCD screen with reduced-volume chirps before full-alarm mode is reached, giving you more time to respond to rising CO levels.
When not showing CO readings and warnings, temperature is displayed instead. The quiet test function also allows for low volume testing.
They can be left free standing or wall mounted. At home they’re ideal for kitchens, boiler rooms, and anywhere gas or solid fuel burning appliances are located. They monitor carbon monoxide, temperature and humidity levels.

Q. What is your top travel safety tip?

If you’re taking your CO alarm on a plane, you need to make sure the type you take is suitable for travel. Many CO alarms come with a pin which you simply pull out to activate the alarm – leave this pin in place before you travel, and when you reach your destination and set your CO alarm up, save the pin so you can reinsert it for the journey home. If your CO alarm has a removable battery, the batteries must be removed and taken separately when flying.
More useful tips
- Even if you’re travelling within the UK, it’s important to remember that Airbnb properties and hotels might not have adequate CO alarms to protect you from the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning.
- When booking holiday properties, it’s vital to check if they have carbon monoxide alarms particularly when regulations in other countries differ. Some booking sites include this information in their listings, but it’s always best to be prepared before you arrive.
- Gas boilers, heaters, open fires and fuel burning appliances are all common sources of carbon monoxide in a home which could potentially leak and lead to CO poisoning.

we only holiday in UK and we always take a smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector
we’ve had a smoke detector and carbon onoxide detector in our holiday luggae for years, can’t be too careful
Always take a door jam for use when sleeping to ensure no-one can open your door from outside.
Keep your money in at least 2 places and carry an old mobile phone with emergency numbers saved. In most tourist cities the biggest risk is getting robbed. If you are in a country where violent crimes are more common, pay for a guide who knows the area.
Dont walk around with your head in your phone. If you are using google maps you can put it in your pocket and listen to the instuctions.
If travelling in hot weather, always drink rehydration salts throughout the day or before bed to prevent dehydration.
Have a power bank with you just in case you phone battery dies
Keep a mini first aid kit in the car and always make sure your phone is charged if you need to call in an emergency
Always take out travel insurance and make sure it covers the countries you are visiting. You never know when you might need it to cover medical bills etc. No point taking chances
My top travel safety tip? Never trust a squirrel with your snacks. I once left trail mix unattended and returned to find a furry thief halfway through my protein bar. Lesson learned: squirrels have no respect for personal boundaries, and they snack like it’s their job.
Travel boldly, but guard your granola!
always research and note down the emergency numbers for the country you’re visiting before you travel!
I use a handbag with little karabiners that lock so the inside cannot be opened
My top tip is don’t rely on phones for safety: yes, use them in the many ways listed above to support well-being and personal, but make sure actual people know where you are supposed to be (and when) and be aware of where your sat-nav or device is taking you: batteries run out and signal can be lost! Be confident and alert wherever you find yourself.
My top travel safety tip is to always travel with a filter water bottle (one that is designed for foreign travel, rather than hiking, so that it covers the full range of pathogens). I LOVE my Water-to-Go bottle – it means I can safely drink tap water anywhere in the world, and has the added environmental benefit of reducing single use plastic waste.
Learn about local customs and laws
Scrunch newspapers into your shoes – keeps them from getting squashed when traveling and prevents strange insects or spiders making a home in them whilst abroad!
Let your friends and family know where you are if going out alone
Share flight, hotel and onward travel details with a friend or family member, so you can be contacted in an emergency.
SPF 50 is a must for me even though it may look overcast the SUN has a way of shining through
Always pack a first aid kit , always have good insurance . If you have allergies then write them out in the language of your destination .
