Top things to do in Corfu

Here’s a selection of the best attractions and activities you can visit on your Corfu trip.

1. Go sailing

While simply being away from home in a beautiful location can still offer a lovely experience, there’s nothing quite like having the freedom to explore the wider locale.

By boat, you can soak up the rarely-seen sights of Corfu and enjoy the peace and quiet of sparkling waters and uncharted territories. As sailing trips are private, selecting your closest friends and family for an intimate getaway can be a real treat. For unforgettable adventures that you simply won’t find anywhere else, sailing around Corfu will give you a whole new perspective, even if you’ve been here before.

The fantastic thing about sailing is that you don’t need to be a pro to rent a boat and have a great time. Those who want to sit back and relax can hire vessels with a skipper, but holidaymakers with some experience can rent without help for a more personalised trip.

You’ll want to visit Gouvina Marina (which is open year-round and 24/7) for all your boat rental Corfu needs. It’s a well-appointed, luxury marina that has everything you need to get around the island with little fuss.

It may be worthwhile creating an itinerary before you stop by, to ensure that you make the most of your vacation. With so many attractions and often so little time, having at least a loose plan of all the things you want to see and do can be extremely worthwhile. Helpfully, I’ve created a list of great things to do in Corfu below!

2. Visit Corfu Old Town

Corfu Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site due to being such a beautiful and historic town. If architecture is your thing then you are in luck as there are plenty of examples of the Venetian’s design talent on display.

Probably the most famous is the Old Fortress which was built by the Venetians to protect the city. Luckily for me and you, nowadays tourists can climb to the top and be rewarded with the glorious panoramic views of the Old Town and the sea.

In peak season the Old Fortress is also a centre for lots of cultural events such as gigs, theatre performances and exhibitions. What more could you ask for from a gorgeous landmark that just keeps giving? Definitely one of the greatest things to do in Corfu town.

Other wonderful architectural treasures:

  • Old Perithia (abandoned village)
  • The Esplanade and Liston
  • Fort Paleo Frurio
  • Kaiser’s Throne Lookout

3. Relax on the beach

When I think of Corfu I immediately think of golden beaches and lucky for us Corfu has plenty of them to offer.

Each beach in Corfu has its unique charm, catering to different preferences, from quiet and serene to lively and bustling. Whether you’re seeking relaxation or adventure, you’ll find a beach that suits your taste on this beautiful island.

Paleokastritsa Beach and Glyfada Beach are both situated on the western coast of Corfu, with Paleokastritsa probably being the most famous. Both have golden sand and clear water with swimming, snorkelling and boat hire available. Glyfada even has windsurfing and jet skis which sounds like so much fun!

Sidari Beach and Canal d’Amour are both on the northern coast with Canal d’amour having rocky coves which would be exciting to explore before hoping out and grabbing some of the local cuisine!

I’m sure we’ve all heard of Kavos in the south of the island and if beach parties, banana boat rides, bars, clubs and a lively atmosphere is what you are after then Kavos beach is definitely the one for you. It will surely provide some of the best things to do in Corfu.

In complete contrast if you’re looking for serenity and relative peace then Barbati Beach on the northeastern part of the island is probably more up your street. So no matter your taste, Corfu certainly has a beach for you to enjoy yourself on!

Even more beaches for you to check out:

  • Issos Beach
  • Agios Georgios Pagon
  • Ermones Beach
  • Halikounas

4. Marvel at Achilleion Palace

Now I love a palace so I am delighted to be able to say that one of the greatest things to do in Corfu is visit Achilleion Palace. It’s one of the most visited attractions on the island so has the seal of approval! It’s a neoclassical mansion which was commissioned by Empress Elisabeth of Austria and is just south of Corfu town. It overlooks the Ionian Sea and therefore has some amazing views which would be great for your Instagram!

Not only is it a glorious palace but has grounds and gardens to match. So if you prefer being outdoors on your sunny, summer holiday then these gardens are still just as much of a draw. They feature palm trees, water fountains, statues of Greek mythology and the all important scenic views!

You’ll also find a souvenir shop and who doesn’t love a tote bag and pen!

Other beautiful natural things to do in Corfu:

  • Vidos Island
  • Pontikonisi (Mouse Island)
  • Mount Pantokrator
  • Kassiopi (fishing village)
  • Mon Repos (botanical gardens)

5. Soak in the history of Paleokastritsa Monastery

The 13th century Paleokastritsa Monastery is on the picturesque western coast of Corfu and once again looks over the Ionian Sea. The monastery’s church is one of the main draws as it has beautiful frescoes and religious icons. Even though it is no longer a monastic community it is still wonderfully serene place to visit though and I think one of the greatest things to do in Corfu.

One of the best ways to appreciate the beauty of the Paleokastritsa area is to take a boat tour. You can visit the caves, small coves, and remote beaches along the coastline. Many of these tours include stops at the monastery.

Other Castles, monasteries and churches:

  • Palace of St Michael and St George
  • Vlacherna Monastery
  • Church of Agios Spyridon
  • Moni Theotokou or Paleokastritsa Monastery
  • Angelokastro castle

6. Make a splash at Aqualand

Culture, art and museums are all well and good but sometimes you just want to let off some steam and have silly fun! Aqualand is perfect for that! It’s one of the largest waterparks in Europe.

So many laugh out loud, and also family friendly, features include multiple water slides, a wave pool, a lazy river (if you prefer a more tranquil pace), kid-friendly areas, mini-golf, go-karts, restaurants and cafes.

It is certainly one of the best things to do in Corfu for families and a great day of fun with friends. Make sure to check the website before going as it is only open from May to early October time for the busy holiday season.

Evem more attractions:

  • Jersey Zoo
