Last week I went to Las Palmas in Gran Canaria. It was a totally last minute thing with my ticket only being booked on the Thursday before I flew on Monday night. I hadn’t even really had time to look at the weather. Turns out it got up to 33C on the Tuesday though. Nice.

Winter Sun in Las Palmas

To be honest I didn’t really have time to enjoy it as I was rushing around on a video project I was working on but I definitely felt the heat as I was interviewing people on the beach. Scorching!

At 9am it would be 22C and just get hotter and hotter. By night I definitely needed a cardigan, but it was absolutely fine to sit out with a cerveza (Spanish for beer, just in case you didn’t know).

Gran Canaria in the winter

As I say, I was zipping around Las Palmas and only got to see a few places as I went by but from what I could see Las Palmas is definitely a place I’d go back to. The fact it’s so hot in winter and makes up that key winter sun destination of the Canary Islands. Next time I’d go for longer and just chill on the beach.

Things to do in Gran Canaria

Winter Sun in Gran Canaria

Surfing is a big one here, I’d love to go back and do some sort of surfing course on the beach. I had a quick visit to the Azul Ventana Hostel and liked the vibe. They had a cool rooftop and were located right by the beach, the oats breakfast was pretty good too. I filmed one of my interviews here.

Las Palmas was full of high street shops. I had to have a quick visit to my favourite European one, Stradivarius, love everything in there and ended up with a cardigan. There was also the usual El Corte Ingles Department Store and about three huge shopping centres dotted around too.

Las Palmas Gran Canaria

Snorkelling is really popular here, you can see the parrot fish swimming around. Oh, and don’t be surprised by the black beach. Never seen one before!

Four miles from Las Palmas you can chill out at the Jardin Botanico Canario and see the huge lizards that like to sleep in the sun. The Old Town is worth a visit too – a beautiful area of Las Palmas with colourful buildings and cute churches.

Gran Canaria is only 4 hours 20 minutes away from London, and you can get return tickets for around £200. Get some sun!
