Travel Tips for Vietnam

Travelling to Vietnam?

Vietnam completely stole my heart. From slurping steaming bowls of pho on tiny plastic stools to drifting through the limestone peaks of Hạ Long Bay, every moment felt like an adventure. It was the first Asian country I ever visited, since then I’ve been back and cycled from north to south.

I’ve wandered the lantern-lit streets of Hội An, zipped through Hanoi’s chaos on the back of a scooter, and found calm in the chilled vibes of Phu Quoc. Here you’ll find all my Vietnam travel blogs – packed with tips on where to go in Vietnam, packing tips, and budget advice to help you plan your own unforgettable trip through this magical corner of Southeast Asia.

Behind the Adventures

Visiting Vietnam

Whether you have one week in Vietnam, two weeks to spend in Vietnam or you’re there for a longer backpacking adventure, my travel guides will help you to plan your trip.

When I got back from my first trip I wrote this article about how Vietnam had affected me. I stand by it all so it’s still an interesting read today. Nothing prepared me for the craziness of the cities for starters, or the questionable clientele out and about at night.

Top tips for travelling to Vietnam

  • Check visa requirements before you go
Many nationalities need a visa or e-visa for Vietnam. Apply online via the official government website and carry a printed copy with you.
  • Embrace the street food
Vietnam’s street food is legendary – from banh mi to fresh spring rolls. Eat where the locals do for the best flavour and value.
  • Learn basic Vietnamese phrases
Even a few Vietnamese words like xin chào (hello) or cảm ơn (thank you) go a long way in building connections.
  • Master crossing the road
Traffic in cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh and increasingly Nha Trang is constant. Walk slowly and steadily – scooters will weave around you.
  • Dress for the climate
Vietnam spans multiple climate zones. Pack light clothes for the south, layers for the north in winter, and rain gear year-round. Make the most of my Vietnam packing list here.
  • Travel by train or bus for scenic routes
The Reunification Express between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh offers stunning coastal views – and sleeper buses are budget-friendly for longer trips.
  • Respect local customs
Dress modestly when visiting temples, remove shoes before entering homes, and avoid public displays of affection in rural areas.
  • Beware of scams in tourist hotspots
Like anywhere, keep an eye on your belongings and agree taxi or cyclo fares in advance if you’re buying Vietnamese souvenirs. Use ride-hailing apps where possible.
  • Stay hydrated and eat fresh
Tap water isn’t safe to drink – buy bottled or use a purifier. Freshly cooked street food is generally safer than pre-prepared dishes.
  • Slow down and explore beyond the cities
Vietnam’s charm shines in smaller towns and rural areas – from the mountains of Ha Giang to the beaches of Phu Quoc.
